Semantic Layer Symposium – Tiankai Feng

Earlier this year, the Semantic Layer Symposium in Munich brought together industry leaders, data scientists, and Knowledge Management (KM) experts to explore cutting-edge developments in data integration and AI-driven insights. This groundbreaking event fostered lively discussions on the future of semantic layers, knowledge management, and the role of AI in transforming data practices. We’re excited to release these discussions for viewing, offering insights from top voices in the field and paving the way for innovative applications of semantic layer technology.

In his presentation, Tiankai Feng, Head of Data Strategy and Governance Services at ThoughtWorks Europe, explores the role of language in data collaboration and governance. Drawing from his background in data strategy and marketing, Tiankai emphasizes how effective language can facilitate collaboration, mitigate misunderstandings, and humanize data processes. He introduces his framework, the “Five Cs”—Competence, Collaboration, Communication, Creativity, and Conscience—as a foundation for human-centered data strategy.

Tiankai discusses the complexity of language within data, noting that terms and frameworks vary across fields, from programming languages to domain-specific terminology. Without a shared language, he argues, data collaboration becomes fragmented, creating silos and inefficiencies. He advocates for a unified semantic layer that aligns language across functions, helping data teams and business units work together more effectively.

Emphasizing the need for intentional and inclusive language, Tiankai suggests rethinking terms with negative connotations (e.g., “master data”) to foster a positive data culture. He concludes by encouraging organizations to build trust and co-create data solutions, highlighting that collaboration rooted in shared goals and clear language can significantly improve data-driven decision-making and organizational cohesion.
