Case Studies

the challenge

The Challenge

The proper use and management of data across a federal financial organization is central to fulfilling supervisory, insurance, and resolution functions. The organization required a comprehensive data catalog solution to serve as a central facilitator for their overarching data strategy and governance program and as a source to search, discover, and gain insights into enterprise-wide data assets.

Currently, the organization hosts petabytes of data across various cloud platforms, mainframes, and databases for use in a variety of systems and applications internally and externally.

The Solution

EK developed an implementation strategy for the overall execution and development of the data governance operating model, ensuring the successful establishment of the organization’s central authoritative source for searching, discovering, learning, and obtaining analytical insights throughout the Corporation.

EK addressed this challenge by starting with the implementation of an enterprise data catalog. Support included:

Catalog Installation and Configuration

Authority-To-Operate (ATO)

Metadata Modeling, Design, and Implementation

Catalog Integration & Ingestion

Data Governance Plan

Training Plan and Delivery

The Results

As part of the initial MVP, EK successfully implemented the data catalog solution to lay a foundation for a federated data governance model to:

Integrate with

  • 4 systems, ingesting
  • 4 glossary sources, and
  • 9 independent classes

Define and embed governance roles and responsibilities across 13+ divisions

Ingest and actively govern 1500+ glossary terms

Establish metadata quality standards and operating policies in an Agile Data Governance Playbook

The engagement is currently on it’s second year and expected to engage over 250 active users across the enterprise and facilitate governance over both technical and business metadata in the catalog.

The Challenge

EK was engaged by a large multinational communications company with over 20 child organizations that was looking for solutions to support with its data strategy and governance practices. There was a lack of transparency over which common data sets were available for use, users did not understand the quality of the data available to them, and each child organization had different definitions of key terms. The goals for this engagement were to quickly demonstrate the value of entity resolution, identify graphs, and quickly demonstrate the value of a data catalog by setting up an enterprise solution to enable discovery, empower users to be able to understand and access the data they need, and guide users toward self-service answers about the data through search and glossaries.

The Solution

To address these challenges, EK implemented a comprehensive data catalog solution, with governance built in from the beginning. EK also created a detailed program plan and trained all identified user personas to ensure adoption and data quality within the catalog.

To help mitigate the challenges with lengthy deployments, EK used a phased implementation approach that focused on maximizing the integration, enablement, and ultimately the actual business objectives of the data catalog initiative.

Success Criteria

Ease of use for developers and end users.

Prioritized data assets cataloged and discoverable.

The Results

The organization experienced ROI as a result of this engagement and currently uses the data catalog across several key child organizations.

Creation and implementation of 10,000+ unified key terms

Successful adoption by over 1,500 users

80% depilation of 2 billion overlapping data records supporting their data quality efforts

the challenge

The Challenge

A major government banking agency was looking to navigate challenges with their data. Experts experienced they were unable to easily access, interpret, and track available data resources. In addition, they often didn’t know the provenance of information and were missing the meaningful context needed to fully utilize their data.

The Solution

To address this organization’s data needs, EK built an ontology to capture key data context and metadata including datasets, documentation, data features, and coding manuals. This work powered a data catalog solution, making it easy for users to find, interpret, and connect to data resources across the agency, including the lineage of information.

Use Cases

Technical Users
Quickly identify relevant data to use for research, analysis, and statistical programming, including the lineage of that information.

Business Users
Know what the data is used for, where it comes from, what its associated resources are, and how to decipher jargon.

Knowledge Managers
Easily describe, organize, and maintain data resources.

The Results

This engagement allowed the agency to:

Increase visibility and intelligibility of data assets to maximize utilization and impact.

Provide data lineage, empowering users to make informed decisions.

Explore data resources with Wikipedia-like interlinked pages.

Leverage your organization’s knowledge, data, and information to make Enterprise AI a reality.
